Electric heat pump water heaters are attracting attention not only as energy-efficient appliances but also as equipment that increases on-site consumption of electricity generated by home PV systems.
In this paper, I focus on heat pump water heaters, which are one way to utilize surplus electricity. We conducted a measurement survey of thermal storage operation in winter, comparing night operation and daytime operation in an occupied house with a PV generation system and a heat pump water heater. We evaluated the energy efficiency of both operational modes and the increase in the ratio of on-site consumption of PV-generated electricity.
Switching to daytime thermal storage operation resulted in a 12% improvement in the system COP, due to increased heat pump efficiency and decreased tank loss. In addition, the on-site consumption ratio also improved.
The optimal setting time at which water heating ends depends on the PV system installation conditions and the amount of electricity consumed by the household so it is important to optimize the design for each household.
