Regional Development
The nature of cities in many parts of the world is beginning to change rapidly. One of the most important reasons for this change is internationalization. In Japan, Tokyo in particular is establishing itself as a major regional center for the East Asia area. In Osaka, a 24-hour airport was constructed which functions with time schedules in every part of the globe. Another reason for urban transformation is that technology has begun to change the structure of cities; a result of the current revolution in information systems. The time and space created by new information systems has greatly affected the basic infrastructure of cities.
However, it is difficult for the average citizen to visualize these changes. We consider this an important problem. It is becoming more and more necessary to re-examine the way physical development has affected the daily life of the urban dweller.
Another aspect of the issue is the question of the role of regional cities and farming communities. For this reason, the subject of the changing city has to be considered holistically. The internationalization of large cities is linked to the role of regional centers and farming communities, and is an important issue throughout the world.
We are already confronting this issue in our research on resort development in rural areas that once supported farming communities. The age is over when the internationalization of large cities can be considered a problem only of Tokyo and Osaka. It is also necessary to maintain an international perspective when thinking of regional development. Any plan for increasing the quality of life in urban or rural areas must be considered from this perspective.
