Energy & Environment

One of the most important factors affecting modern life is energy. However, the use of energy is not an end in itself, but a means to a better way of life. For this reason, the subject of energy efficiency is a deep and complex problem for research.

In 1973, the first energy crisis had great impact on modern society. Jyukankyo became concerned with the energy problem a bit earlier, in studying energy efficiency in the home. Specially, our studies examined the behavior and activities of people at home, and their relation to patterns of energy consumption. In this project as well, our basic concern was for the quality of life, in relation to regional energy use, energy supply problems, rational consumption, and future energy-related problems. Through this early research, we were taught that the subject requires holistic thinking and methods.

The energy problem has been at the core of our research efforts throughout the years. This is because the energy problem is not simply a matter of material consumption, but is directly related to and supports a way of life. Energy as a social issue plays an important part in our thinking towards achieving a "Decent Life," and is an issue that holds meaning and promise for interesting studies in years to come.

We have been for more than 20 years involved in conducting survey on energy consumption especially in residential and commercial sector, and also analyzing the data acquired from these survey. Our research helps government correctly evaluate energy efficiency effect to lead energy policy making. For utility companies, our surveys contribute to planning future market strategies.
